Frequently Asked Questions

1. How often should I have my sails serviced?

For regular service, once a year.

2. What’s it going to cost?

Most sails that have been serviced annually require 1-2 hours of service. Service is billed at an hourly rate. Sail wash is billed at a cost per lb. based on the weight of your sails.

3. Will I get an estimate?

For wash, you will get a cost based on the weight of your sails. For repair, Doyle does not provide an estimate for a sail whose repair is $150 or less. The reason is that it’s time consuming to take out a sail and look it over, and it’s less costly for the client to have the work done when the sail is initially laid out on the floor to be checked over. If the sail needs extensive work, generally more than two hours, an estimate will be provided in advance of any work being done.

4. When should I bring my sails in for service?

The winter is the best time to remove your sails from your boat and bring them in to be checked over and stored in a climate-controlled environment until spring. Also, Doyle runs Winter Service Specials. However, any time you notice tears, significant chafe, or broken stitching, you should bring your sails in for immediate attention.

5. How does regular service help my sails?

It can extend the life of your sails by 4-5 years.

6. What is the process for determining if sails need to be repaired?

Your sails are opened up, and our 10-point check up is conducted on each sail to assess if any repairs need to be done. For sails that are in poor condition, options may be provided to replace the sail.

7. How long will it take to repair my sails?

One to two weeks. Often, repairs can be turned around in one week. Doyle also handles emergency sail repairs.

8. How often should I have my sails washed?

Every two to three years – to remove the salt and grime that builds up. In the off years, at the end of the season, you should spray the sails down and dry them before putting them away for the winter.

9. What is the turnaround time for wash?

The average is two weeks.

10. Is there a warranty that comes with a sail repair?

With Doyle, we stand behind our sail repairs unless we are repairing a sail that we have recommended be replaced, in which case we cannot warranty the repairs.
