Doyle Stratis SuperYacht Sails -- Exceeding Expectations

DOYLE STRATIS™ SUPERYACHT SAILS – MADE IN NEW ZEALAND

Doyle NZ, home of the Stratis™ sail, supplies finished sails direct to superyachts around the world, ready to fit and sail away.

Doyle NZ’s Auckland facility, as well as housing the Stratis manufacturing plant, has design offices and the sail finishing floor all under one roof so quality can be carefully monitored throughout the process. Every stage, from quoting and measuring through planning fibre layout; yarn selection; laminating; attaching hardware right up to bagging and sending out the door is carefully checked by our team. Working in this manner, with everything carried out in-house ensures that your Stratis™ sails are produced to the highest possible standard, and when the sails are fitted to your boat your high expectations will be met.

In addition to tightly controlling quality, Doyle NZ’s unrivalled experience in superyacht sail production gives us a clear understanding of the qualities that a superyacht Captain and owner are looking for when they choose their sails. We have developed our superyacht sails to maximise durability and maintain design shape by resisting stretch while minimising weight aloft – as well as looking good. To withstand the strains put on superyacht sails from both the elements and from highly powered hydraulic sail handling systems certain factors need to be incorporated into the design and manufacture of a superyacht sail. Doyle NZ’s project list is testament to the fact that we continue to meet these requirements.

As well as supplying finished sails directly to superyachts, Doyle NZ also supplies either finished sails to other Doyle lofts or unfinished membranes that can be finished off locally by Doyle’s network of lofts around the world.

INNOVATION

Innovation is a continual process at the Stratis™ plant with Oxford University graduate James Winton working full time as a chemist on the development and application of new fibres, glues and techniques to consistently improve the product. Without giving away too many secrets, James’ ‘discoveries’ have led to improved adhesion within the laminates and the inclusion of new fibres that address the requirements of the membrane.

On the design side, Richard Bouzaid and his team are continually improving their shapes and layouts to provide the optimum sail designs for your requirements. Richard’s CV includes both designing and sailing with successful America’s Cup and Volvo Campaigns as well as with some of the leading maxi and mini-maxi campaigns around.

STRATIS FACILITY

The Stratis production facility is located in arguably the world’s largest dedicated sail loft. With a floor length of 100 metres the facility can produce sails for the world’s largest superyachts. The hall is pressurised with climate and humidity control which enables high lamination standards to be maintained and ensures that variables that could affect the membrane are not introduced.

RECENT PROJECTS

KOKOMO

Launched early in 2010, Kokomo has, at 2,227 square metre, we believe the largest gennaker ever produced. Kokomo, with a full Stratis inventory, has cruised extensively around the Pacific in her first year and saw success at Hamilton Island Race Week taking 1st place in the superyacht division.

BLISS

Bliss also has a complete Stratis wardrobe and has clocked up thousands of miles under sail between New Zealand, Australia and French Polynesia since launch.

Her first annual service back at the Auckland loft showed no major wear and no deterioration or deformation of the sail materials.

Ross Haerle, Captain of Bliss from launch comments:

"Since her launch in December 2009 Bliss has covered nearly 15,000 nm.  During this time we have really pushed our full inventory of Stratis sails and they have performed superbly.  Both the Owner and myself feel totally confident under all conditions and are very happy with their current condition after their first year."

HUGO BOSS

Although built to a different specification to a superyacht sail, Hugo Boss’ sails need to be incredibly durable to make it around the track. As well as being strong and resistant to damage the sails also need to be light enough to be competitive and to maintain their shape for the duration of the race. The outcomes desired from Hugo Boss are not that different from those required from a superyacht, albeit on a different time scale, so the cross over in technology is very relevant to all of our projects. Having the ability to design, manufacture and laboratory test samples in Auckland has helped us produce the optimum product for the task which allows us to provide you with the best tools for the job whether it be for bucket racing, long distance cruising or back to back double-season chartering.

SECRET MENS BUSINESS 3.5 Sydney - Hobart Race Victory

Victory in Australia’s toughest offshore race this year went to Secret Mens Business 3.5. The yacht has a full complement of Doyle sails with all new compression GPx headsails and new downwind sails just before the race. The mainsail was not new; it has been campaigned hard for two years now and still performed at 100%, testament to the durability of Doyle Stratis sails. While a number of the fleet were dropping out of the race with sail damage in the very tough conditions, we are proud to announce that none of the boats with Doyle sails retired for this reason.

While the stresses and strains on race sails may be different on race boats to those on superyachts, the desire for performance is often just as strong. Richard Bouzaid's designs have proved to be fast on the offshore race circuit in punishing conditions and durable enough to make it through to the end.

Thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter, we hope that it has given you some insight into the depth and breadth of our experience.

We believe that the practical experience that we can offer you is unrivalled in our sector of the industry. The high tech and performance skills of Richard Bouzaid and Justin Ferris, fresh from Volvo and America's Cup campaigns, combined with the practical superyacht experience of ex-captains Matt Bridge and Guy Waddilove presents a team with a set of skills that other sailmakers will struggle to match.

If you have any questions about our superyacht products please do not hesitate to contact us:

We look forward to taking care of your future superyacht sail needs.

with best regards from

The Doyle Superyacht team.
